Prisoners as a resource
Gotlands Teater has worked with the Swedish Prison and Probation Service since 1982, staging productions and discussing treatment of offenders.
We try to encourage blasé individuals and inform an ignorant public about the aims and objectives of the Swedish Prison and Probation Service so that the calls for harsher sentences and capital punishment evaporate. For the individual prisoners our productions act as punch bag on which they can vent their frustrations, like a safety valve, a lifeline, a grain of knowledge and hope.
Now Gotlands Teater has put together a production which is being performed in English. The aim is to take the discussion about the treatment of offenders into Europe. The play is called PRISONERS AS A RESOURCE and illustrates, in a highly dramatic way, the situation in the Swedish Prison and Probation Service through the eyes of a habitual thief. The play concerns the Swedish Prison and Probation Service in particular and the treatment of offenders in Europe in general.
The production had its premiere at an international conference in Molde/Norway on 1st June 2007 and was seen by representatives from the prison and probation services in Germany, Italy, Greece, Cyprus, Poland and Norway.
The unanimous approval proves that the production works very well as a prelude to a debate about the treatment of offenders in general, prisoners and prisons.
The play can be ordered from Gotlands Teater and has a running time of about 40 minutes.
One actor plus sound and lighting.
Can be produced in most locations.
